Delacroix: women of Algier |
The Orientalists
Asia - both Middle East and Far East- have always been attractive to the European culture: Alexander the Great and his descendants created a fusion of Greek and Asian civilizations, Byzantine philosophers (like Plethon Gemistos, one of the most influencial inspirers of the Renaissance) were attracted by the ancient Persian philosophy-religion of Zarathustra, a fashion trend following the Ottoman style in clothing and accessories was very popular during the late Baroque period in France, Chinese patterns decorated furniture during the late 17th century, Japanese art influenced late 19th century European art into what turned out to be Art Nouveau... However Romanticism of the 19th century had already favoured painting themes from the Middle East and North Africa (Maghreb, Egypt, etc) since the beginning of that century. Orientalists -painters like Ingres or Delacroix- gave out the romantic aspects of the Oriental life, with harems, baths,
bazaars and seraglios being the most favourite subjects. Other famous "Orientalists" were William Holman Hunt (also a pre-Raphaelite - arts and artistic trends were very much interelating that period) and Jean-Léon Gérôme.
